In convoy FN-43 on a voyage from Candia, Crete for London & Hull with general cargo, including mohair & currants, & a crew of 37 Ionian struck a mine laid by U-20 (Karl-Heinz Moehle) & sank near Newarp Light Vessel on 29 November 1939. Crew were rescued by the sloop Hastings & landed at South Shields. Master William Smith.
