the Hartlepool was damaged on 5th July, 1940, when the ship was torpedoed by an E-boat 16 miles S. by W. of Portland Bill whilst on a voyage from the R. Tyne to Sydney N.S. in ballast. Three members of the crew were killed in the attack. The damaged ship was towed to Weymouth and beached. Subsequently the bow section was salvaged and towed to Southampton where a new stern section was built on.
