Fate

The West Hartlepool-owned steamship Luis was torpedoed and sunk by U-71 (Walter Warzecha), off St. Catherine's Point, Isle of Wight, on 12th April, 1918. The ship was on a voyage from Saint John's, New Brunswick, to Portsmouth. Master  F. Helmrich.

Four lives were lost including two from the Hartlepools:
Robert Coulson
Frederick Jeffries.

The other two lost crewmen were:
Cusack, William Patrick; and Massey, William John.
