In Te Spes - a general history

The translation from Latin of In Te Spes is ‘In God We Trust’.

Completed January 1865; Official No. 51436; cargo ship; 333g; engine Forrester & Co, Liverpool.

Owners: Coupland Bros, Liverpool.

Masters: 1865 MacKenzie.

Miscellaneous: 17 March 1865 two German sailors, John T Tensman & Henry Schoffler, were arrested at Shields for desertion from the In Te Spes of Liverpool. They had signed articles to sail for Bombay on 13 March. Both were sentenced to a month in jail. Their desertion ended up saving their lives.

On her first voyage the In Te Spes sailed from Sunderland via Liverpool bound for Bombay with a crew of about 30 men. She was seen off the Isle of Wight on 16 March 1865 & then disappeared. She was posted as missing by Lloyds in October 1865.
