Bound from the Seychelles for Zanzibar with a cargo of telegraph cable for repair in the East African district the Great Northern ran aground at Fungu Ghawamba reef, Zanzibar on 5 December 1902. The impact tore a twelve foot hole in her side & she was declared a total loss.
